Handlettering Module 1 – Brushpen lettering

Practical Component:

In this module, you’ll learn brushpen lettering techniques which start at a basic level and finish at an intermediate/advanced level. Starting with a session devoted to holding the brushpen and learning basic strokes and letter connections, you will move from there into an exploration of different hand lettering styles and what suits your own hand best. Other sessions explore the really fun stuff: flourishes, colours, blending and effects. There is also a session devoted to feedback and critique of your own lettering pieces, with email follow-up for 12 months after the course ends, with the specific aim of improving your lettering outcomes to a professional level.

All sessions are conducted online via Zoom, with the tutor employing live demonstrations using an overhead camera. Your tutor, Wayne, is an industry professional with many years of experience in commercial lettering and typography. He is also an experienced university lecturer, so he has the skills to teach you what you want to know. Wayne’s teaching philosophy is to focus on practical skills which are in demand in the design industry. Wayne takes a student-led approach, which means the pace and content are dictated by your needs. In-person one-on-one sessions are also available if you prefer, depending on travel and availability.
