Saturday 30th January 2016 :: 10am–5pm
CATC Design School and Billy Blue College of Design,
595 Little Collins St, Melbourne
With Wayne Thompson and Carla Hackett
With an emphasis on doing rather than watching, we will introduce you to the world of expressive handlettering. We’ll plunge straight into brush-pen technique with inspiring examples and discussion. We will explore ways to fit words together, make creative joins between letters, learn how to do flourishing and look at examples of various handlettering styles. You will also get the opportunity to test out various types of handlettering tools including ruling pens, broad-nib pens and brushes. In the afternoon, you can start your own handlettered piece and your tutors will show you through their process of sketching and refining using tracing paper. The afternoon session allows you to work on your own word or phrase, with personal guidance from Wayne and Carla. You will go home with new techniques, inspiration and enthusiasm for expressive hand-made lettering.
EQUIPMENT: We will give you a Tombow brush pen to take home, but please bring some graphite pencils, a ruler, a rubber and whatever tools you would normally draw with. Also bring a word or phrase you would like to produce on the day (swear words preferred). Paper is supplied for you on the day, but you are welcome to bring a sketchbook.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This class is designed for participants who have a professional or personal interest in typography, art or design who would like to improve their lettering skills. Beginners and professionals welcome, it’s all about learning!
